Make the Switch: Ocean Friendly Restaurants

Ocean Friendly Restaurants Hawaii (OFR) is an extremely successful program from Surfrider Oahu dedicated to certifying restaurants and food trucks who have stepped up to fight plastic pollution. Certified OFRs have eliminated Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) foam (“Styrofoam”) from their restaurants, only reusable silverware is used on-site, and no plastic bags are offered.

In one year, 128 restaurants have been certified and the momentum continues! Many restaurants may wish to move away from using so much plastic, but fear negative customer feedback or increased costs. In order to demonstrate for sure that businesses can thrive while eliminating their plastic contribution, Styrophobia is working with Surfrider to launch the “Make the Switch” campaign.

“Make the Switch” provides funding to businesses to switch out one selected plastic product (foam clamshells, plastic bags, straws, etc.) for one month. By covering the small difference in costs, the “Make the Switch” campaign allows owners to see first hand that becoming an Ocean Friendly Restaurant is both financially manageable and supported by their customers.
